UT HIT students gain work experience during Sandlot Internship Program

7/28/2011

Fort Worth, Texas - Preparing the next generation of health information technology professionals is the primary goal of the internship program at Sandlot, a health information technology company based in Fort Worth, Texas. This year, interns say they are taking away from the program much more than they expected.

Amreen Bora, a University of Texas at Austin graduate with a bachelor of science in nutritional science, and John Pierce, a UT graduate with a bachelor of business administration in Management with a background in the IT industry, were chosen to complete a three-week practicum at Sandlot which is required for their certificate program. The two say they learned about Sandlot for the first time when Jerry Malone, Sandlot vice president of business development, spoke to their class. “The management (at Sandlot) is committed and passionate,” said Pierce.

At the conclusion of the internship program, interns are asked to give a presentation to Sandlot employees recapping what they learned. Bora and Pierce gave an overview of the company and shared the highlights of work they engaged in while at Sandlot. They saw firsthand how Sandlot employees set-up physicians and other healthcare organizations on an electronic medical record (EMR), received a demo of Sandlot’s health information exchange, SandlotConnect; and followed the daily activities of Sandlot employees in different areas of the company.  “It’s nice to see patient-centric products and to see how this technology is cutting costs and improving efficiency,” said Pierce.

Sandlot accepts two interns from the University of Texas at Austin’s health information technology certificate program each summer. Students enrolled in the HIT certificate program must be recent graduates from the College of Natural Sciences or an undergraduate with 90 or more hours and a 2.75 GPA, or have a bachelor’s degree from another university.
